Chardonnay

the process

This is the workhorse wine of the domaine both for the Thevenet family and for us. The grapes for this cuvée are sourced from four separate parcels within Pierreclos: “Margots”, “Le Chateau”, “Les Grands Buys” and “La Bucherate”. The average age of the vines is forty-five (45) years. The vineyards face east, southeast and south and are situated about 350 feet above sea level on the gently sloping hills of Pierreclos. The wine is aged in cuve in contact with the fine lees but without any exposure to oak. Total annual production is in the neighborhood of 15,000 bottles with a hefty majority dedicated to the US market.

Chardonnay

about the winery

“At Bernardus we follow traditional Burgundian methods to create a Chardonnay of the highest quality. At harvest, all our grapes are hand picked after careful evaluation for ripeness. The grapes are then very gently pressed in order to obtain the highest quality juice. All our Chardonnay undergoes a malo-lactic fermentation, and our barrels are hand-stirred every two weeks until shortly before blending and bottling.”

Hill Family “Carly’s Cuvee”

the place

Napa Valley, California

the grapes

89% Chardonnay and 11% Semillon

the process

8 months in French oak barrels. The 2019 Carly’s Cuvee was made from a selection of Chardonnay vineyards that Doug Hill has close connections with or manages himself. Cool weather with a few hot spells and a small crop characterized the 2019 season. This wine was made with little malolactic influence, and only light oak. It’s a crisp multi-layered Chardonnay that will please people looking for a wine that enhances food and holds its own on the patio. Carly Hill is Doug Hill’s daughter, and her contributions to Hill Family Estate are honored with this beautiful wine.
